CITY OF MAASTRICHTMaastricht is one of the oldest towns in the Netherlands. Built on the banks of the Maas River as a military and trading center, the old town still maintains several of its original Roman foundations. The Middle Ages has left a charming pattern of winding cobbled streets, Romanesque and Gothic churches, the St Servaas bridge dating to 1280 as well as robust towers, gates, and walls. The more recent 16th and 17th century houses have colorfully painted doorways and shutters. Maastricht is also a vibrant city of first rate shopping and dining. Numerous boutiques featuring designer clothing, art, antiques and decorator items fill the streets around the Vrijhof Square. And some of the best restaurants in the Netherlands have made the city a major gastronomic center. Our hotel is located in the heart of the Old Town so the historic sites, shopping and dining are all within walking distance. One of the artistic highlights of the city is The Bonnefanten Museum designed designed by the Italian architect Aldo Rossi in 1991. A major focus of the collection is Flemish painting from the 15th to 17th centuries including Pieter Aertsen’s ground-breaking work, Meat Stall of 1551 as well as works by Brueghel and woodcarving from the Maas region represented mainly by the Maastricht woodcarver Jan van Steffeswert. The Bonnefantenmuseum is also home to an important collection of medieval religious objects from Western Europe. The Contemporary collection features American Minimalists and Italian Arte Povera forming a frame of reference for more recent acquisitions. At the end of 2006, the museum received the long-term loan of the extensive collection of the Jeanne and Charles Vandenhove Foundation. The collection contains works by internationally renowned artists, such as Kiefer, Nitsch, Tapies, and Warhol among others. |
